Children & Teen Class Descriptions

Dance + Musical Theater Classes
8 yrs – 19 yrs

Ages: 8-17 years

Creative Drama II
Ages: 7+
Creative Drama Level II is a process-oriented introduction to Theatre that develops imagination, creative movement, story building, character building,  theatrical terminology, audience etiquette, group cooperation, and self-concept.  Students must complete Creative Drama Level I (or a similar course) if they are under age 7 to be approved for Level II. Guided by the instructor, each student will participate in fun activities and group discussions including characters, theme, plot, dialogue, mood, climax, and resolution.  Creative Drama Level II builds on Pantomime, Improvisation, Characterization, Group Acting Work, and Story Building concepts.

Ballet
Beginning – Advanced
Students will be introduced to building the strength, flexibility and control needed to execute beginning ballet technique. Each class will include barre exercises and may include some combinations in center. This class will move slowly and focus on building clean technique. Students will be introduced to the proper etiquette of the ballet class room. Technique may include, but is not limited to basic barre repertoire, battements, various turns, extensions, leaps and small jumps. 

Jazz 
Beginning – Advanced
Students will be exposed to various styles of jazz while reviewing basic technique fundamentals. This class is based on ballet technique layered with traditional jazz movement and includes a proper warm-up, stretches, isolations, across-the-floor, and combinations. Technique may include, but is not limited to battements, various turning preparations, extensions, beginning leaps and small jumps. Shop Dress Code

Tap 
Beginning – Advanced
Classes are designed to develop a student’s rhythm, style, and sound. Students will learn a variety of tap dance styles from Broadway to Rhythm tap. Classwork will focus on building flexibility of the knee and ankles, coordination, and speed of movement.

Contemporary
Beginning – Advanced
Contemporary is an expressive form of dance utilizing movement vocabulary from ballet, jazz, lyrical and modern techniques. Students will be exposed to a variety of movement qualities, musical rhythms, and emotional interpretations. Classes will consist of a proper warm-up, across the floor progressions, center combinations, and improvisation exercises.

Hip Hop
Beginning – Advanced
Hip Hop is a high energy dance style, originating from funk and street dance. Class will focus on different stylized techniques, rhythm, and isolations. Hip Hop class encourages dancers to engage in freestyle to help build style and confidence. 

Acrodance 
Beginning – Advanced 
Acrodance is an important component of our dance and theater programs. This popular “human performance” class develops balance, agility, flexibility, strength and motor coordination. The technique is designed specifically for the dance floor and skills are intended to be integrated into dance choreography. Our 12 level Acro program syllabus is taught by teachers certified and accredited by Acro Dance Teachers Association, Acrobatic Arts, Progressing Ballet Technique and Alixa Flexibility. Students will learn a variety of skills such as cartwheels, handstands, front chest stand, hand balancing, headstands, aerial cartwheels, walkovers, and back handsprings.

Acrodance Skills 
Our most advanced class is designed for the serious dancer, even if they do not have advanced acro skills, but possess strong dance technique.  It is a varied levels and taught to accommodate accordingly. The class focuses on dance transitions, putting acro into choreography, learning proper Acro technique and creative variations of skills. 
 

Lyrical
Beginning – Advanced
Lyrical is an expressive form of dance utilizing movement vocabulary from ballet, jazz, lyrical and modern techniques. Students will be exposed to a variety of movement qualities, musical rhythms and emotional interpretations. Classes will consist of a proper warm-up, across the floor progressions, center combinations and improvisation exercises.

Modern
Beginning – Advanced
Class teaches students the basic fundamentals of Horton technique. This class will stretch and strengthen different areas of the body and will include flat backs, lateral stretches, release swings, leg swings, and lunges. Progressions of turns and jumps are taught to emphasize musicality and dynamics within Horton technique. Shop Dress Code

Pointe
Beginning – Advanced

Broadway Dance
Beginning – Advanced 
Class focuses on learning proper dance technique while exploring the various dance styles used in Broadway shows. Curriculum is based on ballet technique layered with Broadway-style jazz movement and includes a proper warm-up, stretches, isolations, across-the-floor progressions, and combinations. Emphasis will also be placed on learning performance skills such as connecting with the audience and expressing a story through movement and facial expression. Shop Dress Code

Acting I
Ages: 8-10 years
This class includes beginning scene study class in which students learn to break down a script to develop character, a Point of View, and subtext. Students study basic music theory and ear training, as well as sight-reading and audition techniques.

Acting II
Ages: 8-17 years
Students gain poise and confidence in this fun-filled introduction to the techniques of acting for the stage! Students learn group improvisation exercises, stage vocabulary, stage directions, and beginning vocal warm-ups for speaking and singing.

Acting for TV/Film
Ages: 10-17 years
